Regulation 35 - Misuse of Distress Signals

  • Distress signals only to be used for the proper purpose.
Regulation 35
1. The use of an international distress signal, except for the purpose of indicating that a person or persons are in distress, and the use of any signal which may be confused with an international distress signal are prohibited.

1. Reg. 35 applies to all ships and persons.

Refer also to Annex IV of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), which prohibits the misuse of distress signals. (See MSN.1781)

4. Out of date pyrotechnics should be correctly disposed of, in accordance with the procedures set out in MGN 419 - "Disposal of out of date pyrotechnics"
